On Wednesday four pupils from class Llewod travelled to Mr Longleys old school (Sandycroft) to play them in the Flintshire schools chess league. We knew they were going to be a really good team as they won the league last year however we also know how talented the Glan Aber team are.
Board 1:Harvey’s game was very hard and close, the girl was called Lilly and last she won the league player of the year. Lilly played very well at defending and attacking at Harvey’s castled side and finished Harvey with a back rank checkmate. However Harvey did amazing and was even ahead on pieces before she caught him out. Harvey’s next game was a bit tricky and he was called Rhys. He was also good but again Harvey gave him a really good game and Rhys was really surprised that it was Harvey’s first match in the league ever.
Board 2:Harry’s game with a boy called Rhys was very close and took 40 minutes, Rhys was a very good player but so was Harry battled well and made him work hard for the win. Rhys only just won by check mating Harry with his queen and his king. After that game Harry play against Lilly after she played Harvey, she was a bit stronger than Rhys but luckily Harry castled before she could get Harry in checkmate. Harry was winning on points but Lilly’s experience came through in the end and she broke into Harry’s castle and checkmated him. She then taught Harry a way to checkmate easily so Harry learnt a new way to checkmate so Harry can try it on his dad!
Board 3: Keleigh was board 3 her first match was against a girl called Bella. Bella was really good but the game was intense because it took an hour to finish. Although Keleigh only had her king at the end she made it really hard for Bella to checkmate her and was unlucky not to get a stalemate. She won by getting Keleigh in check mate in the top left corner, Bella was really nice. Keleigh also played a girl called Carys that one took a few minutes she was also a really good player she also won by getting Keleigh in checkmate in the bottom left corner she was also very nice.
Board 4: Leighton’s first game was with a girl called Carys. She was pretty good at chess. Carys won Leighton but it took her a while to do so as Leghton set up a great defence to try and stop her. His second match was with a girl called Bella she was good but sadly they had to rush a bit as it was getting late. The match was so close! At one point they both just had a couple of pawns and a Bishop left. If Leighton took the pawn before it turn into a queen with the king they he would have easily got a draw but sadly he didn’t so Leighton was a bit in a pickle but did really well.
Despite all of our team playing in their first match and taking on the best team in Flintshire we did absolutely amazing. Mr Longley was extremely proud of the way we were gracious in defeat but also how we battled and matched our opponents for most of the matches. It took them 1 hour and 40 minutes to beat us! The thing that pleased him most though was how happy we all were during and after the matches as everyone was smiling throughout. Our next league match will be after Christmas so stay tuned for another report.
